1899

William Morrison opens a stall at Bradford Market

Our story began when egg and butter merchant William Morrison started our business with a market stall. He’s inspired us ever since to innovate and lead the way in supermarket retailing.

1961

We open our 1st supermarket

'Victoria', our first supermarket opens in Bradford. The former cinema offers free parking and 5,000 sq ft of retail space, selling fresh meat, greengrocery and other provisions.

1978

We expand beyond Bradford

After taking over Whelan Stores, Morrisons operates in Lancashire for the first time.

1980

We begin fresh food production

The Farmers Boy purpose-built fresh food factory begins trading as a wholly owned subsidiary of Morrisons.

1988

Our new purpose-built distribution centre opens

Our first distribution centre at Wakefield 41 (close to the M1), goes into operation.

2001

Morrisons joins FTSE 100

After a 35-year record of sales and profit growth since going public in 1967 - we join the FTSE 100 for the first time.

2004

Safeway joins our family

Morrisons completes the takeover of Safeway, creating the UK's 4th largest supermarket group. To better serve our customers we also acquire a fresh produce packhouse and distribution centre at Thrapston in Northamptonshire.

2005

Morrisons acquires Rathbone bakery

We save 400 jobs by acquiring Rathbone and three factories in Middlesbrough, Lydney and Wigan.

2006

We save 400 jobs by acquiring Rathbone and three factories in Middlesbrough, Lydney and Wigan.

Staying true to our roots our 1,500 Head Office colleagues move into our new 331,000 sq ft building in Thornbury, Bradford.

2011

Our flower offer blooms

We acquire Flower World in Derby to become the supermarket of choice for fresh flowers.

2012

We acquire Flower World in Derby to become the supermarket of choice for fresh flowers.

We launch our own seafood manufacturing business in Grimsby to provide our customers with fresh fish at affordable prices.

2013

‘Employer of the Year’ 4 years running

We’re named ‘Employer of the Year’ for the 4th time in a row at The Grocer’s Gold Awards.

2014

Match and More

Our innovative points-based card initiative promises to price match Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and Lidl.

2015

David Potts becomes our Chief Executive.

David has more than 40 years’ experience in grocery retailing.

2016

We partner up with Amazon

Amazon and Morrisons extend partnership to launch same day delivery service.

2018

Retail Industry Awards

In 2018 we were crowned Supermarket of the Year at the Retail Industry Awards - described as the biggest Award in Retail.

Globe

We buy produce from over 150 countries in every corner of the world.

Banana

Bananas are our top selling fruit by volume and value.

Fish

We buy over 11,000 tonnes of salmon a year.
